The Awami League (AL) government has settled into a second term of office. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the second-largest political party, will continue to challenge the outcome of the January 2014 parliamentary election, which it boycotted, but the AL is likely to resist attempts to hold a second poll.
A major challenge feeing policymakers will be to improve electricity supplies. We expect limited policy success in this regard during the forecast period, but supplies will improve from 2021, when two nuclear reactors become operational. Meanwhile, load-shedding (planned power rationing) will remain a common occurrence.
Fiscal policy will remain expansionary in 2014/15-2017/18, resulting in budget deficits throughout the period. Monetary policy will be accommodative at the start of the forecast period, but we expect policy to be tightened from 2015 as
domestic demand picks up.
