前言

Welcome to the AUSTRALIAN AUTOMOTIVE INTELLIGENCE YEARBOOK 2013 - our 13th edition; please keep it on your desk and/or hard drive through the year.
After 6 record years for the Australian automotive market from 2002 to 2007, sales were weaker and variable from 2008 to 2011, although with 2011 affected by restricted supply from Japan and Thailand. But 2012 made up for 2011, with the market topping 1.1 million vehicles for the first time; and 2013 went a step further.
PMV sales have slowed since 2008, and fell 2 percent in 2013, while SUV sales continued to balloon with volume up another 9 percent. LCV sales also had a strong year, with the shortages of supply now in the past, rising 3.5 percent.
Australian made light vehicles once again had a difficult year in the local market, as sales slipped further to be just 118,510 vehicles in 2013 - 57 percent lower than the 276,375 10 years before in 2003.
Light vehicle production fell 5 percent while, exports fell about 1.5 percent. However exports of components continued to climb from their 2009 low.
Given the sluggish performance of the local vehicles, the announced withdrawal of Ford was not a surprise. The subsequent Holden and Toyota announcements to cease manufacture in 2017 were not completely unexpected, although their stronger domestic sales and export performances gave hope that they might persevere in the face of the continuing high value of our currency.
Toyota was again the leading marque, with sales down slightly on 2012, and Holden remained 2nd in the race, also with a slight loss of volume. Mazda sales slipped very slightly as the new Mazda 3 was awaited, but it remained 3rd best selling marque and was followed by Hyundai with a further strong gain.
Prestige-luxury marques had a strong year, most comfortably exceeding market growth, and Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover and Porsche all having at least double digit percentage gains.
Automotive industry policy did not change in a formal sense, however there was a gulf in attitudes towards the industay between the former ALP government and the new coalition government, as well as apparent unwillingness by the new government to negotiate with Holden and Toyota.
Once again we have a version of the Yearbook on CD which lets you: share the content with your colleagues through the intra company network; take the Yearbook, but not the weight, with you on your laptop when traveling.
If you would like more details on the CD, please call or email.
We try to make data as user friendly as possible. This is not easy - series stop or change and later series differ from the old, while even today much data is only accessible the old fashioned way - searching and copying. We aim to give a history, be as up to date as possible and as consistent as we can - but please read the table notes to be aware of the shortcomings.
Data comes from many sources and details accompany each table. Vehicle sales are almost exclusively VFACTS data from 1991 and PAXUS data from 1976 to 1990, with some Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data filling gaps and prior to 1976, Other ABS data is used extensively in the first chapter, with the permission of the Bureau. Two special sources fill critical gaps in sales data - Australasian Bus and Coach and the FCAI motorcycle group.
Financial data is based on company annual reports and we add our own sales and profit measures lo provide a sector overview. Our analysis of data provides indications of size and performance of industry sectors and of the companies, but it is not investment advice.
Our cover - as with all 21 covers for AUSTRALIAN AUTOMOTIVE INTELLIGENCE REPORT since 1994 - has been crafted by Bernie Walsh. There is a brief note on page 5 about the cover.
Thank you for your continuing support - and we would welcome your suggestions for the next Yearbook. And don't forget that AUSTRALIAN AUTOMOTIVE INTELLIGENCE REPORT has in depth and frequent analysis plus an array of forecasts, to help in your planning.
