This Encyclopedia was based on and adapted from the original text Medical and Veterinary Entomology, written by Professor Douglas S. Kettle. This comprehensive and authoritative book, first published in 1984, has for many years been a standard reference source in its field, being reprinted many times in two different editions, the second in 1995. We are greatly indebted to Doug for allowing us the privilege of updating and restructuring his seminal work, and although the book has been transformed to an encyclopedia format with listing by common name, we have retained much of his content and style as a tribute. Overall, while the subject matter we have included is necessarily selective in its detail, we have endeavoured to provide an extensive overview of the various topics without trying to present a comprehensive account. Sadly, Doug died in October 2012, when this book was in its final stages of publication, so he was not able to see the final product.
