The president, Paul Biya, will—health permitting—remain the dominant political force until the next presidential election, due in late 2018, by which time we expect him to step down, aged 85.
Mr Biya's successor is likely to come from within the ranks of the ruling party, the Rassemblement democratique du peuple camerounais (RDPC), which has a strong grip on the National Assembly, the Senate and municipal councils.
