A wave of civil—society protests over closer cross—Strait relations and nuclear
energy have destabilised the political scene．Taiwan's main political parties
will come under pressure to respond to these populist currents in 2014-18．
The Kuomintang(KMT)government led by the president，Ma Yingjeou，has
been critically weakened by recent protests．It will struggle to make headway
on its trade liberalisation agenda during its term in office，which ends in 2016．
