The Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition will govern with a small parliamentary majority. Malaysia's main political parties will try to persuade members of the legislature to switch sides in a bid to swell their ranks.
Despite having failed to increase the BN's parliamentary representation significantly at the 2013 general election, the prime minister, Najib Razak, is expected to retain his position until the next national poll, due in 2018.
