The governing centre-right coalition was voted back into office with an increased majority following the parliamentary election on October 4th. Laimdota Straujuma continues to serve as prime minister.
We estimate that GDP growth in 2014 was 2.5%, a sharp slowdown from 4.2% in 2013, as the external environment deteriorated. We forecast a modest pickup to growth of 2.8% in 2015 and an average of 3.4% in 2016-19.
We expect the current-account deficit to widen to 2.6% of GDP in 2015, from an estimated 2.2% of GDP in 2014, as export growth continues to be hurt by the sanctions between Russia and the EU, and subdued external demand.
