The military's seizure of power in May 2014 improved the prospects for political stability by reducing the risk of further violence on the streets, but it has not resolved-and could aggravate-Thailand's deep political divisions.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects Thailand's real GDP growth to rebound to 4.1% in 2015, after slumping to an estimated 1.4% in 2014. Annual economic expansion will accelerate further, to an average of 5.5% in 2016-19.
We forecast that the current account will remain in surplus in 2015-19, but the surplus will diminish relative to GDP as imports strengthen. A recovery in tourism in 2015-19 will also help to keep the current account in the black.
