The efforts of the new president, Maithirpala Sirisena, elected in January, to reverse the authoritarian measures implemented by his predecessor, Mahinda Rajapaksa, bode well for the country's democratic institutions.
Mr Sirisena will face challenges in satisfying the competing interests among his supporters. He plans to call parliamentary elections at the end of April 2015. Until they are held, the new government's policies will remain in flux.
