Fiscal consolidation will be the short-term priority for the president, Juan Carlos Varela of the centre-right Partido Panamenista (PP), but this will be constrained by social-spending commitments and subsidies.
After GDP growth of 6.2% in 2014, the pace of GDP expansion will slow from 2015 as large investment projects are concluded. After easing to 1% at end-2014, inflation will tick up as food price controls expire in mid-2015.
Panama's large current-account deficit will narrow as a percentage of GDP later in the forecast period, once large investment projects are completed. As an oil importer, Panama will benefit from low oil prices in the short term.
