The president, Paul Biya, will—health permitting—remain the dominant political force until the next presidential election, due in late 2018, by which time we expect him to step down, aged 85.
Economic growth will accelerate from an estimated 5% in 2014 to 5.3% a year on average in 2015-19. Activity will be driven by large investment projects, production from new oil wells and buoyant services.
Inflationary pressure from international food and fuel prices will be relatively subdued, allowing inflation to fluctuate around an average of 2.3% a year in 2015-19, despite an increase in domestic fuel prices in July 2014.
