The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the president, Rafael Correa, and his Alianza Pais movement, in office since 2007, to continue to dominate the political scene until and beyond the 2017 presidential election.
Real GDP growth is forecast to average 3.3% annually in 2015-16. Stronger oil output and recovering oil prices from 2016-17 will allow for a rebound in government expenditure ahead of the 2017 general election.
The non-financial public-sector deficit will rise to a record 6% of GDP in 2015 as weak oil prices hit revenue. Fiscal pressures will moderate from 2017 as new oil reserves and hydroelectric plants come on stream.
