The president, Pierre Nkurunziza, and his ruling Conseil national pour la defense de la democratie-Forces pour la defense de la democratic (CNDD-FDD) will dominate the political scene in 2015-16.
Driven by agriculture and construction, GDP growth is expected to average 4.7% a year in 2015-16. Economic performance will nonetheless be contingent on Dolitical stability, good weather and favourable commodity prices.
The fiscal deficit will widen from an estimated 2.9% of GDP in 2014 to 4% of GDP in 2015, mainly owing to election-related expenditure. Spending pressure will ease slightly in 2016, allowing the fiscal deficit to narrow to 3.3% of GDP.
