The EU may follow the US in extending economic sanctions on Russia to ensure the implementation of the conditions of a peace deal agreed between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents in early February.
An extension of international sanctions will postpone the recovery in private investment, weighing on economic growth in 2016. In the medium term, growth will be constrained by unaddressed structural weaknesses.
We forecast average annual real GDP growth of around 2% in 2017-19, well below the rates achieved in 2000-08.
