The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the grand coalition of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CSU) and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) to last its full four-year term to 2017.
In the first half of the forecast period external weakness will continue to hit the export-orientated economy hard, with growth forecast to average 1.4% in .2014-15. Thereafter it should improve, rising to average 1.6% in 2016-19.
The current account will remain in strong surplus throughout the forecast period. However, it will fall to 5.9% of GDP by 2019, from an estimated 6.7% of GDP in 2014, owing to rising import demand.
