High approval ratings will bolster the effectiveness of the president, Danilo Medina of the Partido de la Liberation Dominicana (PID), but he will not run again in 2016 owing to a constitutional ban on consecutive re-election.
Growth in revenue will allow the fiscal deficit to narrow from an estimated 2.6% of GDP in 2014 to 2.1% of GDP in 2018-19. The exception will be 2016, when increased spending before elections will widen the deficit temporarily.
After estimated GDP growth of 5.1% in full-year 2014, expansion will average 4.2% annually in 2015-19, underpinned by expanding domestic demand as well as firmer external demand for Dominican goods and services exports.
