Mahinda Rajapaksa will remain president until the next election, probably in January 2015. He will be the favourite to win the contest, owing to rapid economic growth in the next few years and the advantages of incumbency.
The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that Sri Lanka's real GDP will expand by 7.5% in 2014, driven by robust growth in exports and private consumption. Economic expansion will average 6.9% a year in 2015-19.
We have revised our forecast for consumer price inflation, and now estimate that it will moderate to an average of 3.8% in 2014. Consumer prices then will •rise at a slightly fester rate, of 4.3% a year on average, in 2015-19.
