The conservative National Party won 60 seats out of 121 at the September 2014 election and thus remained in government, in coalition with three small parties. It will stay in power until the next election, due in 2017.
The main opposition Labour Party is in a weakened position after losing seats at the last election. Andrew Little, who was elected as Labor's new leader in November, will focus on uniting the party and rebuilding its support base.
