摘要

Healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP peaked in 2009 at 9.9% but subsequently stabilised at 9.5% during 2010-11 because of the recovery in GDP, before edging up to 9.6% in 2012. This represents a level of spending only slightly above the OECD average of 9.3% in 2012, yet healthcare indicators for Sweden often rank above the OECD average.
Over the forecast period, spending will rise again, reaching 10.1% of GDP by 2019. The increase will be driven by the need to invest in new technology and reduce waiting lists to meet rising public expectations. In addition, with 5.2% of the population aged over 80, compared with an OECD average of 4.2%, -Sweden has a large share of elderly citizens.
The government focus will remain on assuring quality and accessibility of healthcare services in the coming years. In order to achieve this, the remit of central government in Sweden's decentralised healthcare system will be widened in the area of monitoring and assessing standards. Evidence of this is the creation in June 2013 of a new Health and Social Care Inspectorate, which will have responsibility for supervising health and medical care services and staff.
