The bursting of a large domestic property bubble in 2007 plunged Ireland's financial system into a profound crisis. Massive recapitalisation and restructuring since then have put the country's banks on a sounder footing. However, they remain vulnerable to the risk of another sharp downturn in the domestic economy, renewed financial market turmoil in the wider euro zone, a reversal of the recovery in Irish property prices and investor concern about the sustainability of Ireland's public finances.
Ireland continues to have a very large financial sector in proportion to its overall economy. In 2013 the industry generated 10.1% of Irish GDP, well above the 5.5% average across the EU, according to Eurostat. The sector employed 4.6% of the Irish labour force, substantially more than the EU average of 2.9%.
