Healthcare expenditure is high in Norway, even by regional standards. At an estimated US$9,747 in 2013, spending per head was among the highest in the OECD and well above the EU average. According to the OECD, healthcare spending grew at 7% in 2013, its fastest rate since 2008.
As the population ages, healthcare spending will rise correspondingly, although sales of medicines are expected to grow more slowly, as a result of government efforts to crimp the drugs bill. Population growth is also high for a West European country, at around 0.6% a year.
