The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that spending on healthcare will remain fairly stable as a share of GDP in 2014-16, after declining sharply in 2011 as spending cuts outpaced the decline of nominal GDP. Thereafter, continued fiscal restraint in the sector is likely to hold down spending growth, but we expect healthcare spending will recover slightly, to 10.3% of GDP by 2018.
As a result of exchange-rate effects, the US dollar value of healthcare spending increased in 2013 by around 4%, and is forecast to slip a little in 2015, before returning to growth in 2016-18. Between 2014 and 2018 we forecast an average 2% increase in healthcare spending per year in local-currency terms, or a 1% rise in dollar terms. It will therefore rise at a much slower pace than prior to 2012, when it significantly outpaced economic growth. By 2018 we expect spending per head to be worth just under US$2,300.
