Austria has a modern and comprehensive healthcare system, funded by near-universal social insurance. Health expenditure per head is a projected US$5,610 in 2014 (lower than in Switzerland but higher than in many other west European countries), up by 2.9% from 2013, slightly boosted by exchange-rate effects. In local-currency terms, spending per head is estimated to have risen by 2.3% in 2014, to €4,201.
As a percentage of GDP, expenditure has stayed steady at around 11% in recent years; this level has generally been below that in Germany, France and Switzerland, and above that in the UK and Italy. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects spending to rise slightly as a share of GDP, to 11.4 % by 2018, with upward pressure from population ageing offset by cost-containment measures.
