The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that total energy consumption rose by 1.4% in 2013, to 25m tonnes oil equivalent (mtoe) from 24.6mtoe in 2012. Energy consumption is expected to rise steadily over the forecast period (2014-20) as the economic recovery gathers pace. Nevertheless, continuing efficiency gains will restrain growth of energy and electricity consumption in the coming years.
Oil and natural gas are the main energy sources, with nuclear a steady third and coal a distant fourth. In terms of shares in the energy mix, during the forecast period we expect petroleum products to decline modestly, natural gas to remain fairly steady and nuclear energy to dip slightly before recovering. The shares of some renewable energy sources will continue to grow, from a low base, bringing the country closer to EU requirements by 2020.
