Healthcare spending has risen rapidly since guaranteed universal access was introduced under a scheme called Plan AUGE in 2005. In the five years from 2009 to 2013, spending rose by 10.3% per year in local-currency terms (with especially fast growth, of 18.3%, in 2010, when Chile was hit by a major earthquake).
Plan AUGE coverage guarantees were extended in 2013 to 80 diseases and ailments, up from 69 previously and from 25 when the scheme was launched. Further expansion of coverage, which will contribute to the growth in overall healthcare spending, is expected under the new government of the president, Michelle Bachelet, in office since March 2014.
