摘要

With little in the way of oil or gas reserves, and with energy consumption growth outpacing production, Turkey has long been a large energy importer. This, and its location at the intersection of the Middle East, Russia and Europe, means that Turkey will continue to play an important role at the crossroads of regional energy politics.
Turkey does not produce electricity from nuclear sources, but the government is determined to begin doing so by 2020. Given the controversy surrounding nuclear power, however, The Economist Intelligence Unit does not factor nuclear power into its forecast period (2015-20).
Turkey is seeking to develop its position as a regional energy hub, connecting European markets with the main oil- and gas-producing countries in the Middle East and the Caspian Sea region to ensure its own security of supply, reduce the environmental risks associated with heavy tanker traffic through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, and enhance its geopolitical standing. As a result, the government is involved in the negotiation of several oil and gas pipeline projects.
