Portugal's energy sector is small by European standards, reflecting the comparatively low population and middling income levels. Portugal does not have many energy-intensive heavy industries, and its mild climate means that less energy is consumed for heating purposes than in northern Europe.
Given that Portugal has limited domestic energy resources, with no domestic production of oil, natural gas or coal, the country is reliant on imports to meet a large share of its energy consumption. The proportion has been felling as renewable energy sources are tapped.
