摘要
Colombia is the fourth-largest vehicle market in Latin America (behind Brazil, Mexico and Argentina) and has an installed productive capacity of around 320,000 units per year. The automotive industry as a whole represents around 10% of GDP and is a major source of employment, with up to 25,000 people working in car assembly and as many as 1m people in component parts production. However, the industry suffers from competitiveness challenges, and The Economist Intelligence Unit expects domestic production to struggle over the forecast period.
Vehicle sales contracted in 2012-13 after expanding almost continuously for a decade, but the sector has recovered in 2014, and sales are expected to grow moderately in 2014-18. Over 50% of vehicles sold are imports, made mostly by Asian carmakers (chiefly from South Korea and Japan).
Trade liberalisation policies, including free-trade agreements (FTAs) signed with the US, EU, Mexico and Brazil, combined with aggressive competition, have reduced prices and broadened consumer choice. As many as 40 different makes are on offer. Nevertheless, the market share of the four main car-assembly firms remains at 75%.
