India has the third—largest retail market in Asia,after China and Japan.
Following a slowdown in 2012—13,retail sales are estimated to have rebounded in 2014 on the back of stronger economic growth and improved consumer confidence. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects retail sales growth to accelerate sharply in 2015—16,in response to a pickup in economic growth and a boost from low oil prices.Over 2015—19,sales are expected nearly to double,reaching
US$1.96tm by 2019.The retail sector is undergoing a structural shift from small,farnily—run shops to larger,organised retail outlets. Surveys by the Reserve Bank of India(the central bank)indicate that consumer confidence has improved since mid一2013,after weakening from 2011.Although the cost of goods remains a big influence on spending decisions,over one-third of survey respondents in December 2014 said they planned to increase spending over the next 12 months.
