Mobile telecoms will account for the vast majority of telecoms revenue by 2019. Penetration is already much higher in the mobile sector than in fixed lines, at an estimated 150 subscriptions per 100 people in 2013, according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-the UN's agency for information and communication technologies (ICT). This is the highest level among Latin America's major economies.
The mobile market is maturing, and growth in mobile subscriptions has slowed substantially, from an annual average of 28% in 2006-08 to an estimated 8% in 200913. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects growth to continue to moderate over the forecast period, but mobile penetration will still grow, to 174 subscribers per 100 people by 2019, meaning that Argentina will retain its lead in mobile penetration in the region.
Growth in mobile telephony will be led by data transmission and mobile broadband. Substantial investments have been undertaken by telecoms companies to allow them to develop their value-added services, including mobile data (and ultimately increase average revenue per user).
