摘要
Car sales in Taiwan are highly cyclical and are dependent on the health of the economy. Passenger-car sales were flat in 2013 as local economic activity remained lacklustre. Stronger economic growth is expected to lift sales in the early years of the forecast period, but this performance is unlikely to be sustained. The economy's trend rate of growth is lower than in earlier decades.
Automotive production in Taiwan reached a peak of 436,700 units in 1992, but stood at 291,000 passenger cars and 47,600 commercial vehicles in 2013. Many car plants on the island are operating at below-capacity.
Taiwan is developing a foothold in the fast-growing and potentially lucrative market for electric vehicles, particularly in terms of parts manufacturing. Many of the island's aspirations are geared towards the export market, but the government's decision to liberalise energy prices in early 2012 will boost local demand for electric and energy-efficient vehicles as fuel prices rise.
