摘要
South Korea has a large and well-developed financial services industry, with financial assets valued at over 570% of GDP. Domestic financial institutions have gained greater operational freedom from the state than in the past.
The country has a modest-sized financial sector for an economy of its sophistication. Taken together, finance and insurance accounted for 5.8% of economic output in 2014, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK, the central bank). The industry employed a somewhat small share, 3.3%, of the total active workforce in 2014, according to Statistics Korea.
Deregulation has remained the government's key policy focus, with varying degrees of success. The current government is seeking to bring down cross-sectoral barriers under a universal banking initiative, which is expected to help South Korean banks and insurance companies to move into overseas markets in its early deployment.
