The Bulgarian energy sector is small and primarily comprises electricity generation. Bulgaria is dependent on Russia for supplies of oil and gas, but has substantial coal reserves and is a net exporter of electricity.
Coal has the highest share of gross domestic energy consumption, accounting for more than one-third of the total (an estimated 34.1% in 2013), followed by nuclear energy (an estimated 23.2% in 2013, down from an average of 25% in 2002-06), oil (22.5%) and natural gas (13.6%). Nearly all domestic coal output is used for electricity generation.
