摘要

Taiwan's energy consumption is estimated at just below 110,000 kilotonnes oil equivalent (ktoe) in 2013. Energy consumption is forecast to expand by an average of 1.3% a year in 2014-20, reflecting solid economic growth. Taiwan's per capita energy consumption is similar to that of neighbouring countries, such as Japan and South Korea.
Taiwan has virtually exhausted its domestic non-renewable energy resources and now relies on imported fuel for almost all its energy requirements. As a result, it is vulnerable to supply shortages and fluctuations in global commodity prices. Most of Taiwan's oil is imported from the Persian Gulf and West Africa, while Indonesia and Australia are the main source of its coal imports. Taiwan is also a major importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Plans to reduce the use of nuclear power, which accounted for 16.6% of Taiwan's electricity output in 2013, could impose supply-side constraints late in 2014-20. All three of the island's nuclear power plants are scheduled to be shut down in 2018-25. Increased combustible fuel imports will be needed to offset this loss of capacity, resulting in upward pressure on electricity prices. The fete of a fourth nuclear power plant—the nearly complete Lungmen facility—hinges on a referendum.
