Total healthcare spending in Pakistan relative to the size of the economy is low, at an estimated 3.3% of GDP in 2014. It is likely to remain flat in these terms in 2015-19 as spending increases in line with the pace of economic expansion, although the proposed expansion of national health insurance could, if implemented, lead to a fester pace of growth towards the end of the forecast period.
An expanding population, rising life expectancy (and the consequent growth in the number of elderly people) and increasing urbanisation will underpin greater demand for healthcare services. Population growth is forecast at an average of 1.6% a year in 2015-19.
Overall healthcare spending will increase from an estimated US$8j.bn in 2014 to US$i3.6bn in 2019, representing average annual growth in nominal terms of 10.8%. Spending growth in local-currency terms will be even fester, at an average of 12.6% a year. This is considerably fester than The Economist Intelligence Unit's forecast of real GDP growth, reflecting the feet that much of the rise in healthcare spending in nominal terms will be a consequence of rapid inflation. Healthcare expenditure per head will rise from an estimated US$44 in 2014 to around US$68 in 2019.
