Canada was the tenth-largest vehicle producer in the world in the first half of 2014, according to the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA). However, production is in decline; it was down by 1.8% on the same period of the previous year.
Canada's production of vehicles far exceeds domestic demand, and the country exports most vehicles to the US. Canada imports a lion's share of the 1.8m vehicles sold domestically-from the US, Mexico, Japan and South Korea.
Total vehicle sales amounted to an estimated 1.85m units in 2014, of which less than one-half were passenger cars. The remaining vehicle sales comprised trucks, with the bulk of these consisting of light trucks. Based on Scotiabank data, light trucks have provided all of the sales growth in recent years, while sales of cars have steadily declined.
