摘要
As China's rate of economic growth decelerates, many retailers are slowing the pace of store openings and are restructuring existing operations with a greater focus on profitability. According to the China Chain Store & Franchise Association (CCFA), the increase in outlet numbers among the top 100 chains in 2013, at 6,600, was the lowest on record. The top two chains—locally based Suning and Gome—both saw a net reduction in store numbers.
Nevertheless, compelling opportunities will continue to attract retailers to the market. Although retail sales growth is expected to slow in the forecast period, it will still remain rapid by international standards. Increasing wages, progress in urbanisation and reform of the hukou (household-registration) system will help to boost consumption. Meanwhile, the fragmented nature of the market offers opportunities for consolidation.
