In 2013 India was estimated to be the third-largest energy consumer in the world, after China and the US. Its population of over 1.2bn will ensure that the country remains one of the world's largest energy consumers and a net energy importer.
The rapid pace of expansion in energy use will push up India's carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. India overtook Russia and Japan in 2011 to become the world's third-largest emitter of CO2 in absolute terms.
