At an average of 84% a year in 2014-18, energy consumption will grow fester than real GDP growth, which The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts will average 3.9% a year over the same period. Annual energy consumption will rise from 324m tonnes oil equivalent (toe) in 2014 to 44.5m toe in 2018.
Oman is looking into alternative energy sources such as solar power. Outline plans for a 200-mw solar project were unveiled in early 2012, but the scheme has so far not progressed.
