Despite this rapid growth,Vietnam's retail sector will remain smaller than those of most other large countries in South‘east Asia.We forecast that retail sales will stand at US$n8bn in 2018,compared with US$i80bn in the
Philippines,US$151bn in Thailand and US$138bn in Malaysia. Vietnam's middle class will expand rapidly;the proportion of households earning more than US$xo,000 will grow from 10%in 2014 to 25%in 2019.The quality and expense of the average basket of goods will rise as increasingly affluent consumers purchase more imported Western and luxury goods.
