Mobile telephony has expanded rapidly, with an estimated 141 mobile subscriptions per 100 people at end-2013, up from 13.8 ten years before. User penetration is lower, however. Pyramid Research estimates it at 67.4% in 2012, owing to a large number of customers with multiple SIM (subscriber identity module) cards.
The rapid increase in mobile telephony reflects several years of robust growth in real incomes before 2008, the emergence of a middle class, aggressive marketing, improved payment schemes and the generally poor state of fixed-line communications.
