Indonesia has substantial reserves of oil, coal and natural gas. The country had proven oil reserves of 37bn barrels at end-2012, representing 0.2% of total global reserves, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2013 report by UK-based BP.
The government's desire to reduce Indonesia's net dependence on imported petroleum-based fuels will lead to increased investment in geothermal energy. The country has also committed itself to achieving ambitious reductions in its greenhouse-gas emissions.
Rising gas demand within Indonesia is curtailing exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG). In 2013 the country signed its first LNG import agreement (with Cheniere Energy of the US). Imports are due to commence in 2018.
