Mobile telecommunications service providers' revenue is forecast by The Economist Intelligence Unit to drop to US$3bn in 2014, from an estimated US$3.3bn in 2013, partly owing to social unrest at the beginning of the year. This drop also shows the impact of a decline in tourist numbers and slower business activity, which has resulted in lower mobile roaming usage and lower revenue from international calls.
In November 2013 the government announced a plan to establish a new high-tech city in the west of Alexandria, in Borg el-Arab, at a total cost of E£4bn (US$574m).
