摘要

The Russian car market fell back in 2013 after its strong recovery in 2010-12. Credit and real incomes will grow more slowly in the forecast period than before the crisis of 2009, constraining sales growth.
The slowdown in the Russian economy, caused in part by international sanctions, will lead to a sharp fell in new-car sales during 2014-15. The government may respond with further measures to support the industry and boost consumption, particularly of domestically produced vehicles.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects growth to be relatively robust over the medium term, especially compared with sales in the developed world. Sales will be driven by growth in credit and real incomes, as well as by the low rate of car penetration and high potential replacement rates.
Not long ago it looked as if Russia would soon become Europe's number one automotive market, but this now seems unlikely until the end of the decade.
Russia is Europe's second-largest producer, behind Germany and narrowly ahead of Spain. The country's output fell by 2.6% in 2013, to just under 2.2m vehicles, reflecting the drop in domestic demand.
