The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that retail sales in France stood at €377bn (US$501bn) in 2014, down by 0.4% compared with 2013, in line with the economy's weak performance last year, which was characterised in particular by stubbornly high levels of unemployment.
The outlook is for fairly weak growth in consumer spending, particularly during the first half of the forecast period, when private consumption growth (and retail sales) will be constrained by the economy's slow recovery. If the euro zone crisis were to intensify beyond Greece-not our baseline forecast, but an ongoing risk-households would rein in spending sharply.
The French economy has yet to move into a solid recovery phase and despite a partial recovery in approval ratings for the governing Parti socialiste (PS), which is making gradual headway with its relatively new reformist stance, political risk remains elevated owing to the growing mainstream popularity of the far-right Front national (FN).
