Ukraine has proven natural gas reserves of around 6oobn cu metres, according to the BP Statistical Review 0/ World Energy 2014, as well as substantial coal reserves-the third largest in Europe, behind Russia and Germany. Nevertheless, as a result of limited domestic energy production and inefficient use of energy in the large industrial sector and among households, the country remains reliant on imports of natural gas, oil and coal from former Soviet suppliers, mainly Russia.
In April Gazprom, the Russian state gas monopoly, withdrew the gas price discount offered to Mr Yanukovych as the interim government made clear its intention to press ahead with EU integration. Russia also unilaterally withdrew the discount paid as "rent" for the use of Crimean ports, having incorporated the peninsula into its own territory.
