The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that retail sales volumes recorded a small contraction in 2014 overall, of 0.8%, after growing by 1.3% in 2013.
Russia's retaliatory ban on imports on Western food products, introduced in August 2014, combined with a weak rouble, has pushed up inflation and will discourage consumption of imported products.
Real GDP growth slowed to just 0.6% in 2014, on preliminary figures, with a spurt in retail growth in December helping to prevent a slide into recession in the fourth quarter. We forecast an economic contraction of 3.5% in 2015 and a drop in real consumer spending of just over 6% in 2015.
