摘要

Brazil is the world's seventh-largest economy in US-dollar terms and the eighth-largest consumer of energy, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2014. Brazil is one of the world's biggest producers of hydropower, and has huge reserves of oil and gas, which will turn the country into a top-ten oil exporter by 2025.
Moderate GDP growth will sustain annual electricity consumption growth averaging 2.9% in 2015-20. Large investments will be needed to increase capacity. The government is overseeing construction of several hydroelectric mega-plants to meet demand, but these are suffering construction delays.
Brazil's profile as an energy producer is changing. Since 2006 there has been a series of major offshore oil and gas discoveries in ultra-deep waters off Rio de Janeiro. According to BP's Statistical Review of World Energy 2014, Brazil had I5.3bn barrels of proven oil reserves, the second-highest quantity in South America after Venezuela (297.6bn), and around 1% of the global total. Reserves are likely to rise considerably as sub-salt resources are explored and developed.
