Consumer spending growth has been constrained since 2011 by the continuous political turmoil，the low rates of overall economic growth and the depreciation of the Egyptian pound．However,retail sales are likely to benefit if the recent signs of economic recovery are translated into a sustained rise in real GDP growth over the forecast period(2015—19)． The medium-term outlook will be underpinned by population growth，and by continued economic growth，which will average 4．4％over the forecast period．The political turmoil and slow economic growth since 2011 have held back the retail sector,but with economic activity starting to recover,new entrants to the retail market have an opportunity to make a strong impact． Demand for imported goods，which had been gaining popularity among local consumers，will be hindered by inflation and by shortages of foreign exchange．The local currency has depreciated by about 25％against the
US dollar since 2011，but its rate against the euro in early 2015 was similar to the 2011 rate．
