Uptake of third-generation (3G) subscriptions following their launch in 2002 was fester than in most other European countries, and growth has remained firm since then, supported by rising penetration of smartphones (40% in mid-2014) and demand for non-voice mobile services. According to Pyramid Research, a consultancy, 3G mobile subscriptions will account for about 80% of all mobile subscriptions by 2015.
Uptake of high-speed fourth-generation (4G) services, launched in 2012-13, has been steadily gathering momentum as service availability has improved. 4G subscriptions are forecast to account for 15% of all mobile subscriptions by end-2015, according to Pyramid.
Italy has four mobile operators, three of which are foreign-owned: Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), a subsidiary of the former state-owned operator, Telecom Italia (TI); Vodafone Italia (UK); Wind (Norway/Russia); and H3G (Hong Kong).
